Red, white and black. The three most powerful colours. The colours of Coca Cola. The colours of James Bond. Put two and two together and you get this, one fantastic collaboration between one of the best film franchises of all time and one of the most well known brands in a dark and beautiful video clip.

One might say it’s the perfect mix.

NOTE: Before you watch this I suggest you head down here and listen to the song in it’s entirety first.

Look familiar? Go With The Flow

Perhaps this is a sneak peak at what we can expect in the title sequence to the new James Bond film Quantum of Solace? If so, I’m sold and it even has the potential to better Casino Royale - and that’s a big claim.

If you haven’t heard the theme song yet in it’s entirety then you should head here where you can hear Another Way to Die by Alicia Keys and Jack White. I think it definitely brings back a slight feeling of the Sean Connery era… but that’s just me.

Apparently Sean didn’t really like it, however:

Jack White doesn’t seem too happy that Coca Cola used a modified version of the song before the film came out, and rightly so (from NME):

Jack White has distanced himself from a new TV advert for Coca Cola which uses his new James Bond song, ‘Another Way To Die’.

The song, a duet with Alicia Keys, will appear as the theme song for the forthcoming Bond film, ‘Quantum Of Solace’.

Jack White’s song is soundtracking an advert for the drink Coke Zero, which Coca Cola have re-branded Coke Zero Zero 7 to tie in with the film.

However, White’s management have issued a statement distancing The White Stripes and Raconteurs man from the advert, claiming that it was not his decision to license the song for use in the promo.

“Jack White was commissioned by Sony Pictures to write a theme song for the James Bond film ‘Quantum Of Solace’, not for Coca Cola,” read the statement. “Any other use of the song is based on decisions made by others, not by Jack White.

“We are disappointed that you first heard the song in a co-promotion for Coke Zero, rather than in its entirety.”

Lastly, here’s some more James Bond and Coke goodness from Nelson Balaban on the Behance Network:

I’m closing all applications for freelance jobs for the rest of 2008 while I work on my personal projects including launching a new portfolio and completing my Degree in Multimedia Communication Design in a couple of months. Projects that are already underway or that have been proposed and agreed upon will be completed this year, however no more requests for new jobs will be accepted.

One of the main reasons for easing off my workload so early is that I’m actually working on a new portfolio and network of websites that will all launch late 2008 to early 2009. Also, I haven’t had a single holiday this entire year, so it’s time to have a break from working 24/7 and sort a few things out.

Many thanks.

This year has seen an unbelievable amount of geek-related media turned big screen masterpiece. The Dark Knight, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (though I wouldn’t call this one a masterpiece) - most of which have earned their place in the top 250 films of all time, according to IMDB. Not to mention the big ones of the past; Transformers, V for Vendetta, Sin City and 300.

Iin the next six months there are more of these films being released than anyone could possibly take in. Heres a look at what to expect in late 2008 to early 2009:

A lot of people have already been bagging this film, months before it has even come out. Mostly because of the casting choices and the CG daemons we see in the trailer that bare no relevance to the original game. Fair enough… but I personally can’t wait to see it. The trailer blew me away - and though I can’t see any logical reason why Ludacris would be cast in this film at all, let alone as Jim Bravura, I’m now 100% convinced that Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis can pull of Max Payne and Mona Sax respectively. As long as she doesn’t sound like Meg from Family Guy.

That said, two brand new posters for the film have just been released, and they look just as powerful, dark and noir as the game ever did. See below for a view on the new posters. Click either one for a hi-res version.

Embedded below is the trailer I mentioned. If you haven’t seen it yet, then I don’t know where you’ve been! The Marilyn Manson soundtrack and bullet time shots make it all the worth watching!

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been working on a contract job with Leighton Contractors, helping them style their new management system before it’s implementation and launch this coming Monday. During this time, I have been working closely with some of the lead developers of the system, and in doing so was introduced to this handy little tool called FireBug. Firebug is an add-on for Firefox 3 that allows you to not only view the core code and styles of a web-page, but temporarily alter them in real-time effectively allowing you to debug on the fly.

I was blown away by the fact that this was even possible, let alone free and unheard of by myself. The only problem was, I’m a Mac geek and couldn’t possibly part with Safari even if it meant gaining a tool such as Firebug.

A quick Google search returned this trick for Mac users whose only option is Safari. Simply copy the following line of code, and open your Terminal which is located in Applications > Utilities > Terminal. Paste it in and hit return. All you then need to do is restart Safari.

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitDeveloperExtras -bool true

At first glance this may appear to have done nothing. However, if you navigate to any webpage, or just use this one and right click anywhere on the site. You’ll notice a new option at the bottom of the menu reading Inspect Element. Hit this and you’ll be presented with a new window not unlike the one below:

I can’t answer why this is already built into Safari and hidden. My only guess is that the developers over at Apple use it to maintain the application and don’t want it to be easily accessed by your everyday user.

As you can see below, just like Firebug, the Safari Web Inspector - as it is known, can be docked to the bottom of the window by hitting the button on the lower left of the Inspector.

Hitting the Console and Network buttons will give you further view options and statistics. The only major feature that Firebug has over Safari’s built in Inspector is the ability to edit on the fly as mentioned above. Personally, I can live without this because I can usually predict the result of a CSS tag without changing it in real-time (unless if we’re talking about IE here) so it is a small sacrifice in exchange for sticking to Safari.

So there you have it, a very handy little tool tucked away within Safari - “the world’s best web browser.”

UPDATE: Also consider FireBug Lite, a basic version of FireBug designed to work with browsers other than Firefox.

ShnowWear are currently offering a special discount on all tee-shirts in order to liquidate stock and switch to a new supplier. Simply go to www.shnowwear.com and instead of using the online purchasing system, contact them directly via the online contact form and quote Designoir and your shirts will be reduced from $44 to $11. That’s a saving of 75% - not bad is it?

If I havn’t tempted you yet maybe this will:

Have you ever wondered how to redirect one domain name (your website address) to another website? This quick tutorial will show you how in layman’s terms. You’d be surprised how many people have asked me how to get their old domain name to automatically redirect to their new one, or to have five or so different domains point to the one website.

For example, let’s say you own the following domains:

www.domain.com , www.domain.com.au , www.domain.net

Obviously you’re not going to want to manage three of the exact same website, for so many reasons it’s not funny;

1) You’re paying for extra hosting that you don’t actually need
2) Your search engine optimisation will be split among three different websites - good luck getting results!
3) Your visitors are being forced to download and cache the same information repetitively.

Just to name a few!

What needs to happen in this situation, is a domain name redirection. It’s very simple to do, and will save you money and time, and will even help your search engine results as well as being “web-friendly”.

Here’s what you do:

1) Open any text/html editor and create a new document.
2) Save this document anywhere on your hard drive and name it “index.html” without the quotes.
3) Copy the following code into the document:

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
    <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://www.your-domain-name-here.com" />
    <title>TITLE OF SITE HERE</title>
</head>

</html>

4) Edit the “http://www.your-domain-name-here.com” to the full domain of the site you want to redirect to.
5) Edit the title of the webpage - this is not so important, as it will only be seen for a fraction of a second before the redirection takes place, but it’s always best to do a little extra anyway.
6) Using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or your web control panel, upload this file to each domain you want to redirect from.

That’s it!

To make it even easier for you, I’ve already created said file as a template, and made it available for download here:

Download Redirection Template (4KB)

Simply unzip the file and edit as described in steps 4 and 5, then upload it to each site you want to redirect from.

PS - I know this is very simple for most people with even the most basic knowledge of web design - but as I said, one would be surprised as to how many people have asked me how to do this!

Properly designed Wordpress themes are actually very hard to come by. There are many themes available that look nice, sure - but how many of them actually work as a functional template for a blogging and CMS based website?

Many designers (comfortable with PHP and CSS) love to create their own Wordpress themes so they can demonstrate the quality of their work and have something nice to add to their portfolios - or maybe they just want to contribute to the community? Many of them will also build their own unique templates, giving them their own look and feel.

However, what if you don’t know PHP? What if you can’t afford to hire a web designer to build you a template/website? What if you don’t have the time to sit down for weeks on end building your own unique theme? In all of these circumstances, we tend to use a template. Sometimes making small modifications to suit the feeling of our work, sometimes without any modification at all.

Over time this list will develop, as I add any themes I come across that are worthy of a mention. Unlike other blog posts that showcase a top 100 or so themes, this list will never get that long - I don’t believe there are even 100 themes out there that are good enough.

If any of the below links become inactive overtime, or if you have your own theme you’d like examined then let me know here - I’d be glad to have a look.

This website has been near inactive for the last month - I know! I’ve been burried under with work and have had to neglect my personal site as a result. Rest assured, the last month has not gone to waste. I have picked up a couple of new clients, and been keeping a list of all the little bugs throughout the site.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be making lots of small aesthetic and functionality modifications to the site to bring it back up to par. I’ve also got a couple of half written posts from back before my time was taken from me that I will fine tune and post shortly.

After that, I’ll launch the rest of my portfolio and downloads section - stay tuned.
