NIN // The Slip
Trent Reznor has never ceased to amaze me with his extremely tight connection with his fanbase and what he gives back to them for their continual support. Today, he gives us a brand new, DRM-free Nine Inch Nails album absolutely free of charge and available for download directly from nin.com. The album was released an hour and a half before this post, and I’ve just finished hearing it for my second time.
As usual with NIN’s music, the album tends to grow and grow on me every time I hear it. Usually their albums feel a little rushed the first time I listen, but after a couple of times hearing the album, and memorising some of the lyrics, I really start to appreciate the music more. It is for this reason that I encourage everyone not to judge this album, or any other for that matter, upon its first listen.
Now, this is a design blog, but I can’t help but write these reviews about great music and films that impress me. After all, isn’t that where a lot of designers get their inspiration from? From other forms of multimedia? I know I do.
The music, seems to be going back to an earlier NIN, more like the days of With Teeth in 2005 than anything else, and I have to say, I did like the direction NIN was heading with Year Zero, but am equally impressed and satisfied with them going back to how they used to be.
The album art has definitely headed in a different direction to previous NIN albums. Abandoning that futuristic, apocalyptic feeling NIN tend to express, and instead heading for a darker more surreal image. They might have left the apocalyptic style behind with Year Zero, but the pixelated graphics are still visible on the album cover - a NIN trademark. What stands out for me personally the most, is the colour choice. The designer has chosen a colour scheme of red, black and white - my favourite three colours, and indeed the most powerful colours available. When used correctly, the impact is phenomenal.
To quote Trent on nin.com:
“As a thank you to our fans for your continued support, we are giving away the new nine inch nails album one hundred percent free, exclusively via nin.com. The music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE.”
What more can I say other than go and get yourself this album, its free after all so you have nothing to lose. Just head over to NIN’s website and download it!
Enjoy.

Hey Designoir, when are you and Fussy Studio going to make a film together? NIN music is free and would be awesome to use in a film. Hope to work with you in the near future mate!
Agreed. Tropfest ‘09 or ‘10 is looking promising what do you say mate? If we make one, we’ll have to send it to Trent Reznor just to show him how awesome he is.
That is so on our to do list! So many things to do and so many clients to meet - life is so much fun now.
Indeed, aint it grand. NIN just makes it even better.
Well im off! See you later in the studio. haha
A very nice album. Ghosts to me is good for a long train journey with plenty of distractions or a dinner party, then it acts as the perfect background.
It is good to hear some music with lyrics… and this is a true NIN album… thumbs up all the way

Agreed. This is always how I feel about a NIN album; not so sure the first listen, completely hooked on the second, playing it for years after that!
